This is the anecdote my mother’s pastor was referring to in this post.
Christianity was never about picking and choosing what to follow. Jesus wasn’t cool with the rich man choosing to keep his wealth. He wasn’t cool with people getting grossed out at the thought of eating his flesh. He would not be cool with people using Christianity to support their bigotry and selfishness.
If following Christ were about being happy and comfortable, the disciples wouldn’t have abandoned everything in their lives. Saint Stephen would not have been stoned to death, and there would be no Christian martyrs at all. The first pope wouldn’t have been crucified.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
Matthew 7:21-23
