several of my accounts, and have stopped using a number of others, because keeping track of passwords is too difficult, i left twitter because i couldn't figure out how to log in on a new phone, it's not just me???, unmedicated adhd, dyscalculia, i cannot type a password accurately, if i can't copy paste it i can't log in, the end

resharing this oldie because i just got a new laptop and the number of times i am being required to login to things, login to a DIFFERENT app/program/password manager/authenticator, provide a number, and then login again is making me fucking INSANE (Your picture was not posted)

i do not at all mean this in a perjorative manner, but i do think it’s important to be able to consume a piece of media and go, “i’m not the audience for this” and be able to just walk away

there doesn’t have to be something wrong or “problematic” about something for a person to not like it. personal taste is personal taste. but something not doing it for you doesn’t mean it automatically has to be wrong or bad. it’s just not for you.

There’s been several times when I’ve watched a thing and been like, they clearly did what they intended to do, and did it well, and I don’t want any part of it. This is a high quality and deeply unpleasant piece of art.

my life is enhanced by not watching everything just to please the other people who enjoy those things. There are things I need to not have in my head.

This works for music too. My coworker is only a couple of years older than me and has pretty wide-ranging musical tastes but he likes to complain he hasn’t enjoyed any rap that came out after 1994, and I finally told him, “That’s because it’s not for you.” Because it’s not! He doesn’t realize it, but he doesn’t like any of the music that’s coming out now, because it’s for young people, and he’s not young! It’s not aimed at him, it’s not made by his contemporaries anymore, it’s not for him. If he can find meaning in it great! But if he can’t, which was the root of his complaint, that’s not because it’s not good, it’s because it’s not for him.

I’m not really a born critic, but it’s gotten easier for me to understand the world once I started saying “Well that’s not for me” more, instead of “that’s bad”. There are things I do think are harmful, sure, and a lot of things I think are out there as soulless cash-grabs or, worse, symptoms of the various things going badly wrong with our culture, and all that. But like, the vast majority of the time, it’s not “bad art”, it’s just not something that connects with me. Cool! Let me opt-out and be on my way.

(Mumble mumble I think the fucking algorithm taking away people’s agency in this and instilling us instead with the overarching value that outrage is the way to get clicks is training us as a culture not to understand self-curation anymore, but that’s my digression.) (Your picture was not posted)
