i was feeling silly at the gas station today so i said to the cashier that i’ll take my gas “to go” and i could see her imagining what it would be like to jump over the counter and strangle me to death

when i worked at convenience stores during college i would laugh every single time a customer would wander in and tell me

“i got gas”

took everything i had not to say “that sounds uncomfortable” and instead ask what pump [in the local accent, “got” and “have” are pretty interchangeable, so if they had intestinal gas they’d likely say the same thing]

here’s a fun fact nobody ever fucking looks at the numbers on the pump. they were always like “idk, the one i used?” and i’m like “yes we have eight of them and six are in use, which one was you?” and it was like. they’d never gotten gas before, had no idea how this worked, hadn’t ever noticed that other people shopped here too.

Anyway nowadays you have to pay up front so this doesn’t come up and will just be one of those crazy weird grandma facts of a bygone era but like if you’re trying to write a period piece about the days when people pumped their gas and then came in and paid for it and you’re like “how did they know which pump was theirs” the answer is that the pumps have six inch high reflective numbers on them for the customers to refer to but no customers ever did and the cashier had to sherlock holmes that shit themself every time.
