Gently releasing this take from Sylvanaqua Farms

into the Tumblr ecosystem like a field ecologist releasing a bird with a
brightly coloured leg band 🤗
Um what???
[image: Marie Kondo meme: This one does not spark joy: Blindly trusting
Sylvanaqua Farms because it is founded and run by a man who is black and
indigenous and has progressive political views This one sparks joy:
Recognizing that the Xerces Society is a highly recognized scientific
nonprofit who's recommendations are based on research. And who cite sources
for further reading. And who's leave the leaves campaign article does not
say what this meme seems to think it says. Also not everywhere has the
historical fire regime this meme assumes and your backyard is probably not
a forest either way.]ALT
Sorry I’m just??? Leaving the leaves will cause your yard to succeed to
forest???
I get that this guy probably does know a lot but this seems outside of what
I can find about his expertise
https://href.li/?https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1636209312/sylvanaqua-farms
as a farmer and former software engineer and this take is absolutely wild.
Also, leave the leaves can mean leave them where they fall on your lawn
(How do you get forest succession from that?? And to my knowledge
historical burning did not normally take place in the late fall - how is
this even comparable?) but the actual articles
https://href.li/?https://xerces.org/leave-the-leaves from Xerces also
have advice for not killing your lawn with too many leaves, avoiding
conflicts with neighbors, and using the leaves as mulch if that’s more your
thing. So if you want to “clean up your damn yard” then you should probably
actually read what Xerces has to say about how to do that without
destroying insect eggs that might be on the leaves.
As someone who studies fire-adapted systems for a living (mainly rooted in
the alternate stable state hypothesis, which is what seems to have been
alluded to), what Sylvanaqua Farms said was at best mostly untrue.
Basically, burning was a practice undertaken only in certain areas for a
variety of different reasons, but does NOT serve the same function AT ALL
as raking the leaves. Flipping the switch from forest to grassland or back
is very difficult.
Longer post to follow tomorrow. The original post really irked me.
riparianmoon https://tmblr.co/Mkz3bN05HxwPhRMWR7D3y0w has some great
points about insects and time of year at which burning occurs (I’ll get
into that more).
Let me know when you’ve written the longer post and I’ll reblog it!
Honestly, you can rake the damn leaves from point A to point B, just don’t
put them in a giant plastic bag and send them off somewhere else.
Caterpillars overwinter under leaves. They don’t much care if you move the
leaves off the sidewalk, but they care very much about burning, shredding,
etc. At least leave the poor devils alone until late spring so they have a
shot at emerging. Or put them in the mulch pile and let them hang out there.
Luna Moths are one of many species whose numbers have plummeted because of
our obsession with removing leaves. They actually make a little dried leaf
tent that they overwinter in, which gets raked up and either set on fire or
shoved into a giant plastic bag that looks like a Jack-o-lantern and then
shipped off with the rest of the yard waste and run through an industrial
shredder.
(I do not know why we, as a society, feel that dead leaves are some kind of
horrific affront, but goddamn, it’s like the leaves talked shit about
Grandma or something.)
Burning a prairie or savannah is very different, and at least around here,
not done in late autumn/winter. It’s too goddamn soggy.
Hoary bats and red bats are also known to overwinter under leaves. Which is
admittedly pretty weird, but apparently a thing.

Whoa! I did not know that, that’s amazing!
A gentle little push that yes, Sylvanaqua Farms is run by a Black
indigenous guy and his overarching point was, these personal-responsibility
memes are enormous distractions from the actual massive causes of
environmental devastation caused by large-scale agricultu
https://www.instagram.com/p/CmRbnDtu8P0/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3Dre and
corrupt political cronyism, and it’s one thing to find hope in individual
action etc., and quite another to simply leave your lawn un-raked and
figure you’ve done your part and that’s all that needs to happen.
He was using this meme to make the point that you should run for political
office, yes you, in your local area, yes yours, now, right this moment now.
But if you want to freak out about leaves and then do nothing else, and
pat yourself on the back for being More Woke Than The Indigenous Guy, then
like, well you’ve made his point, now haven’t you.
That linked post won’t be up much longer, as this was part of his Make A
Splash Then Get Off Meta-Owned Social Media endeavor, but if you go you can
watch the exact effect he’d been discussing happen in his comments section,
where all these Woke Environmentalist Types immediately go straight to
calling him a dumb brown savage, for challenging one of the Current This Is
How We’re Saving The World trends. It’s really illustrative. And here y’all
are.
