Spent this weekend working on my not-so-tiny house. Actually we spent Friday morning too. So, Friday morning, Saturday morning to early afternoon, and then Sunday all day. Our goal was to do all of the rest of the exterior structural shit that supports the roofs. The roof is designed to overhang about a foot on all sides of the cabin, and there’s structural stuff underneath all of that– soffits and like, extra little rafter things, and whatnot. The house is designed to be insulated, and for that you need ventilation. So there’s a bunch of shit along the long sides of the house that builds out from the wall, and as part of that you wrap a bit of fiberglass screen up around the tail ends of the rafters of the roof, and staple that down and then nail a couple thin battens of wood down to hold the screen– and then there’s like an inch air gap there, for air to flow up over the insulation just under the surface of the roof. The plans don’t call for a vent at the top, but you do need one; a visitor to the farm who’s a professional housebuilder explained that to us, so we’ve got that added on to the high-stakes roofing thing that’s got to happen: the first step of putting on the roof is going to have to be cutting open the roofing underlayment at the peak, which means the roof will not be waterproof in the slightest for the duration of the work. So once we start we can’t stop. (We may also need to remove a board right at the peak; you want just the metal ridgecap there. The plans really don’t mention it at all, so now we’re wondering if we have to go along that peak and staple another strip of screen down, or if we’re just meant to let squirrels do what they want up there.)

Anyway– cut for some photos, but the upshot is that by 5:30pm yesterday we had managed to do all of it, even the shadow trim, which I just think is a hilarious concept. (It’s really just an extra bit of surface to nail into when attaching roof, but the concept of The Shadow Trim really amused me.) So now the house is ready for the roof. Which is going to take some doing. So we’ve booked a crew of five (mostly ourselves), for October 16th, so if everyone could like, pray for no rain that day, that would be fuckin sweet.

stapling up the screen– BIL on a ladder with a staple gun up against the north wall of the cabin

where we’re at now, which doesn’t look like a ton different but it was so much work. maybe you can see the fly rafters there, at this near end– that’s not a bit the underlayment is exposing, that’s a bit that we built out from the edge of the house. so. there it is. [image description: a cabin sitting in some woods, with a ladder leaned against the front; it’s all wood on most of its surfaces, and there are lines of wooden trim all around the edges of the surface that’s going to be the roof.] (Your picture was not posted)

Begging people to understand that homophobia doesn’t mean “being mean to gay people because they’re gay”, misogyny doesn’t mean “being mean to women because they’re women,” and transphobia doesn’t mean “being mean to trans people because they’re trans.”

These are all intertwined systems of oppressive social control.

The whole THING is that gender policing of all types is used to keep people in line to make them act “normal” (to act as their gender should).

When a young boy doesn’t want to play football and his brothers do, and they call him a sissy, they are being homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic. Even if he is straight and cisgender.

If a cishet woman is derisively asked “what are you, a lesbian?” For having short hair, she has experienced homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny.

One of the reasons it’s so necessary to discuss them is because they are systems of control. The words aren’t just describing types of hate crimes etc perpetrated against certain groups of people, it describes the violent aspects of cisnormativity, heteronormativity, and the patriarchy.

This post was made bc im mad about ppl being like “how would a person not lgbtq experience homophobia” (something I literally just saw) and “trans men can’t experience misogyny and especially not transmisogyny” and “I’m a wholeass lesbian I can’t be homophobic” (both sentiments I’ve seen multiple times before almost word for word). Those are just a few examples of the stuff I’ve seen said online from people who unfortunately don’t understand how systems of oppression work to keep everyone in line.

Transphobia, homophobia, and misogyny are all inseparably intertwined because they come from the same place and have the same purpose. (Your picture was not posted)

witcher, meet death sitting, fit for pearls, my writing

today was monday wasn’t it

well listen it has been real busy around here. i will have an update one of these damn days i swear. I just worked through the weekend on the cabin, and now we’re into the All Chicken All The Time phase of the week, so who knows when it will be.

here is a snippet to tide y’all over:

“Oy,” Tiron said, nudging his horse over too close, which startled Morvran’s filly. Fortunately no matter how distracted he was, some part of Morvran was always paying close attention to his horse, so he had sunk into his seat before she even fully began to react, and had her in hand, holding her head back as she tried to toss it. “Wake up.”

“Don’t harass my horse, Captain,” Morvran snapped. He’d completely failed to pay attention to anything about the column moving out.

“She’s a troublesome one,” said a woman’s voice, her Nilfgaardian softened by a Northern lilt, and he realized in some dismay that his filly had swerved more or less into Rheydin’s path, and the Crown Princess had needed to draw rein to avoid a collision.

“Sorry,” he said, feeling himself blush with mortification.

She laughed, though he couldn’t tell if it was scorn or amusement. “No, it’s no trouble. She seems rather young.”

“She’s– yes, she’s not four yet, I don’t think,” he said. “She’s not very well-trained yet, and there isn’t much time to work on her manners.”

The filly was still tense under his seat; she was unhappy and did not want to do this, and if he were training her at home now would be the time for him to stop the session, cool her down, groom her, give her some treats, turn her out on pasture for the rest of the day. She needed a break, she was still so young and it was overtaxing her to have to work so endlessly.

But they were in… he’d lost track of where they were. They’d come through Nazair, he vaguely remembered. At any rate, they had two weeks yet, at least. She sighed, and some of the tension left her neck, enough that he could let go of the reins with one hand and pat her shoulder. “Be easy, sweetheart,” he told her, “the captain is a troublemaker and a scoundrel. You have to ignore him.”

“I,” the princess said, “er, are you speaking to the horse?”

He felt himself blush again. “Oh,” he said, “yes, sorry, I was speaking to the horse. Ca– Highness, Captain Hesner is not actually a scoundrel.”

“Thanks for that, General,” Tiron said, with a laugh. “High praise! I’m going to put that in my recommendations file. Not actually a scoundrel, what a glowing review!” And he winked at the princess, who laughed brightly.

“Well,” Morvran said, “it wouldn’t do to be too effusive in praise.” He leaned forward a little, to better scratch at the filly’s mane. “Except to you, of course, darling.”

“Now you know he’s talking to the horse,” Tiron said. (Your picture was not posted)
