Cirilla contemplated him a further moment. “So you tell me instead,” she said, “and I–” Morvran twitched, but subsided, and she watched him quietly for a moment. “What do I do to keep from making it worse?”

“You pretend you don’t know,” Morvran said, quiet but intense. “You pretend you haven’t the slightest suspicion. Maybe you don’t like the guy, that’s fine, you don’t have to pretend that. But you take him at face value, and you pretend you don’t care about him either way, he’s one of your father’s friends and he’s old and creepy and you don’t care. And then you watch everything he does, and never for an instant give anyone reason to believe you’re doing that. You don’t talk to Intelligence about him, you don’t talk to housekeeping about him, you don’t mention his name or glance his direction, you pretend you don’t care about him at all. And you wait.”

“Until what?” Cirilla asked.

“You wait until Emhyr is out of range to protect him,” Morvran said, “and then you leave him to me.”

He was still flushed and sleep-rumpled but something in his expression had changed. His eyes were icy and his jaw set, and Luliana had the sudden chilling insight that he was related to Emhyr and had been taught every bit of the man’s ruthlessness.

“I could just kill him,” Cirilla said.

“I don’t want him dead,” Morvran said, “I want him destroyed. Excised entirely, and his reputation in tatters. I don’t want his faction to have his memory to rally around, I want them to immediately try to forget him entirely. I don’t want his accomplishments in history books under his name.” He leaned forward slightly. “I don’t want any of them to think they can use the weak spots he carved into me to control me.” (Your picture was not posted)
