capsules
so I’ve heard of the concept of a capsule wardrobe before, and as someone who’s an inveterate hoarder, the thought gave me shivers.
I recently read an article about it, and i pondered it for several more seconds– yes, getting rid of the things I don’t like to wear is not a terrible idea, it would make it easier to put together outfits and such, sure–
and yet I came away more certain than ever, that the concept of a capsule wardrobe repels me utterly.
I guess it’s good to know things about oneself for certain, in this day and age.

Tbh I think non-minimalist people use the idea for like. Travel packing. I’ve used the idea while marathon sewing for a big trip and that’s it.
Yes, yes, I was being more flippant than I should have been. Honestly the concept was helpful to me, to think about putting together outfits given my weird clothing storage situation, where I can’t actually access most of my clothing at the time I get dressed. And every time I pack to go to the farm for a week I more or less have to do this, except it’s more annoyed and clunky than that– my farm-only clothes, with a few layering pieces, and the “in case I leave the farm I should have something without bleach on it” worry warring constantly with the “if I wear it to the farm I’ll get bleach on it” truth lurking beneath. So most of the squares in the sudoku or whatever are taken up with single-purpose “if it goes below freezing I’ll be miserable without this and if it rains I’ll be miserable without that and I’d better have an overshirt to catch the filth” sorts of garments.
I was reading about it in the context of the Curvy Sewing Collective’s posts on it, and I can see from that along with the various sewing bloggers I’ve been backscrolling lately– people sewing things they love to sew but hate to wear is a real problem.
Fortunately that doesn’t seem to be a problem I’m having– the things I’m stirred to sew are born of my frustrated desire to wear those things. But I can see how it’s a problem for people, and a useful thought exercise.
But I can also see how Instafluencers use this concept to convince people to throw out everything they ever wear and buy only new coordinating pieces, and, ugh.
LOL today I wore gratuitous layers– a dress over another dress– as that seems trendy and is something I admire on other people and this was a lace-hemmed shift dress over a slightly longer a-line dress, why not, sorta cute eh?– and it turned out really useful because the zipper broke on my good winter coat and so while I was scraping the two inches of fucking ice off my car (I went to bed and it was raining and around midnight I heard it change to ice, ugh, and then it got quiet and I knew that was snow) I wound up rubbing the whole front of myself all over the fucking car, which is why I have a long coat to begin with, except the fucking zipper is broken– anyway, when I got to work I took off my soaked-through outer dress and now I’m wearing a perfectly good dress by itself.
