I am almost done with Witcher s2 and this is about to become a Fringilla
fanblog tbh. (No spoilers in this post.)
I watched maybe the first 6 episodes of season 1 when it first came out and
had no idea what was happening. It seemed a bit violent for me. I didn’t
watch the end of the season but did read a few fics that crossed my dash
(mostly Geraskier) so maybe that contributed to me becoming emotionally
attached to the characters? I just have a lot of feelings for all of them
right now. When season 2 came out I started with ep 7 of season 1, and went
from there, and it all seems to make a lot more sense now. Like I have deep
feelings for Ciri, and her relationship with Geralt. I love Jaskier even
though I hate his stupid voice and think his songs are not catchy and very
forced (unsure whether canon wants me to feel that way or if its just my
ear. IDK characters in universe seem to think he has talent, especially
HIM, so 10/10 for commitment.) And I am deeply, deeply emotional about
Yennefer. I don’t think she really wants a kid so much as she’s just
unhappy with everything no matter what and frankly…relatable. I love her
self-insertishness. Sometimes it seems like a man is writing her and
sometimes it seems like a woman who’s like, “what if I WAS a powerful mage
with my tiddies half out???”
But like. Fringilla. I need to see her doing unhinged things and loving it.
I need it.
Are a lot of people in the Witcher fandom writing to the netflix canon or
is it mostly fans of the books / games?
What are the ship names for f/f ships?
Also I feel like the episode with Vareena (the bruxa?) really helped me
trust the show a little more. The first couple episodes of season 1 are
very “big strong guy with sword kills monsters” and my first question in
that scenario is generally, “why am I not rooting for the monsters?” And I
feel like that episode was very morally grey, very “it’s ok to root for the
monsters, actually, because they can feel love and pain and everybody’s
gotta eat and we’re all just doing our best.” Ciri is an eldritch horror,
Geralt is an eldritch horror, we’re all eldritch horrors here. It’s fine.
oh ho ho my leetle friend. rubs hands together welcome, welcome. Indeed,
in all the canons part of the point of the Witcher is that the Good Guys
aren’t unambiguously good or always right, the Bad Guys are often the
heroes of their own stories actually, your heroes wil let you down, and
your villains may save you, and the most important thing is that war is
never noble or worthy it’s always a fucking waste. The books were written
by a man born in a WWII-ravaged country who ravenously devoured a lot of
English-language fantasy novels and was slightly cynical about them even as
he clearly loved them. The other canons are… somewhat less clear about
this, but often I do think the sarcasm and self-awareness shines through,
charmingly.
yes, there are a fair number of show fans writing fic. I started out that
way, and then the hiatus was so long and the pandemic so intensely
isolating that I branched out into games and finally books, so my shit is
Not What You Want. (A lot of us did that, which I know does make it a lot
less accessible. This also explains why certain pairings that seem totally
bizarre given Netflix canon are so overrepresented in AO3– you can bet
those are characters who interact in the games, or are more important in
the games than in Netflix, like Triss Merigold and Philippa Eilheart. LOTS
of great dark Philippa/Triss stuff; Phil is a fantastic character in the
books and the games [also, canonically lesbian!] and we’ve only just met
her in S2 Netflix.) But.
I know there is a great amount of interest in Francesca/Fringilla, but so
far few fics have emerged. Some Yengilla fics date back from S1, and I
expect a great deal more to follow after the lovely content S2 has given us
to work with for that ship. The main f/f shipnames are Yennefer/Fringilla
as Yengilla, Yennefer/Tissaia as Yenaia, Yennefer/Triss Merigold as
Trissefer, and Fringilla/Francesca seems tentatively so far most likely to
get tagged FrinFran but again, not a lot of fic written yet, but I know of
several in progress.
Unfortunately, of course, Tumblr has just broken all its tags again so
there’s no way to search for anything. I’ll reblog this and see if anyone
following me has any direct recs.
I asked one of my Discord servers for recs as well, and was told that
limerental’s in dark and twisted braids
https://archiveofourown.org/works/32116468 is an absolutely superlative
Yengilla fic dating from S1. I haven’t read it yet but I have it open in a
tab now!
In general I do think the Witcher is a good place to come to meet your
morally grey needs, but that aspect of it isn’t my particular specialty so
I humbly ask anyone reading this for recs!
