dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)

fannish pedantry to the rescue, this answers nothing but now we've really thought about it, NOW WITH MORE MAPS i am delight, the fan-made map is the clearest one, all the profesh ones are excessively aesthetic and lack consistency, but i digress

So someone sent me a note, pertaining to the last chapter of Fit For Pearls https://archiveofourown.org/works/31289303/chapters/83210671 where I’d had Morvran explaining the political situation, asking me a few questions about specific scenarios, and from the questions I eventually realized that while I had a pretty clear idea of how the war ended up, the commenter did not. And it struck me that, well, it is sort of breezed-over in the game. It’s just presented as a bare fact that Nilfgaard has almost the whole North– well, everything up to the Pontar– and if you’re not paying attention it’s easy to overlook.

So here’s a basic summary of what has happened in the Third Nilfgaardian War, and how it ends if you’ve wound up on the Empress Ciri ending, which is what I’m taking as the foundation for the stories I’m writing. (No shade to the other endings, I just wanted to write about court intrigue and bookish lesbians; fair play if you’ve got other dreams, and more power to you.)

On that point about the seemingly-nonsensical “Dol Blathanna - Mount Carbon line”, it may be worth noting that the front lines of conflicts aren’t generally straight lines as the crow flies. Especially for Witcher-era conflicts, the front would likely follow things like natural boundaries and fortified towns rather than being a point-to-point line across a map. So here’s a suggestion for making sense of Roche’s quote there:

Also see this reblog https://akilah12902.tumblr.com/post/661894841929695232/a-primer-on-the-3rd-nilfgaardian-war for screencaps of the closing credits of W2, which seem to pretty clearly depict Nilfgaard advancing steadily up from the south in a straight progression, through the poetic image of fire burning the paper of the map but avoiding Brokilon and Mahakam.

The unavoidable conclusion here is that each one of us separately has already given this four thousand times more thought than anyone who was paid to work on any of these projects 😂 This is the curse/blessing of fanfic I guess. (Your picture was not posted)

This chapter got away from me, I wrote one POV and was like no, he doesn’t know enough, gotta try a different one, wrote the other POV, and was like well she doesn’t know everything either, fuck now I need to keep both of these, how do I decide, and my darling beta readers were like well clearly just use both, and well. fine. okay. i did. Is it clunky? well I don’t know anymore, I’ve now looked at it too much.

I did get to revise it while riding on a train, which for an American, is a fantastic novelty. So. I had a good time doing that, and I saw a kettle of literally 30 turkey vultures near Canajoharie, and did you know that turkey vultures were originally only native to the Southwest but then the interstate highway system and the carrion it produces allowed them to spread throughout North America? I know isn’t that weird? My sister told me that, she’s listening to The Heartbeat Of Wounded Knee on an audiobook. I’m digressing but listen life is hard kinda.

So this CHAPTER does not have vultures in it and is on AO3 here https://archiveofourown.org/works/31289303/chapters/84014020. What it DOES have, is self-harm by a person, and a risk of harm to an animal, but both of them are largely ok; it is the aftermath of a pretty severe panic attack / depersonalization episode, and it’s maybe a little rough but overall people are being nice about it, in the story, so. Kinda brace yourself but I don’t think it’s gonna be too bad. (Your picture was not posted)

turkey vultures!!! I love seeing them in their

gossip gangs; I didn’t know they were called ‘kettles’!

ah the “kettle” isn’t just when they’re hanging out, it’s specifically a thing they do– it’s a verb, but you noun it when it’s them doing it– it’s when they do that thing where they ride a thermal up in like a spiral? so it’s just this massive Vulture Vortex kind of thing, it looks amazing.

ah more here: http://www.kern.audubon.org/tvfacts.htm

There’s a bit where the Mohawk bends between two shoulders of a busted-up mountain bit, where the river broke thru in like glaciers times, and it’s called Big Nose and Little Nose, and I love it and I am just– filled with this certainty that it must have been a sacred site or just a crucial part of a living landscape, I don’t know– I haven’t been able to come up with anything in the cursory research I’ve done so I’m like 99% sure it was Haudenosaunee land (the Iroquois Six Nations) but I don’t know which kind, my apologies– but just from what little I know there’s no way this wasn’t a big landmark and important site, and I am always filled with awe as I pass it, and to add to that there’s so often a vulture kettle nearby, just a little further along–

I know the landscape is heavily changed in recent years, there’s very clearly a spot where a landfill was put in a few decades ago, but I’m always filled with this kind of awe as I go by it, I love that spot and despite having done occasional Internet research dives on it I’ve never really learned anything about its specific history. I got a page on its geologic histoy but not its history with humans, I just don’t know. I just always am super aware of it whenever I pass by. (Your picture was not posted)
