Article mentions that some of them were sent to locations where they couldn’t get the second dose because the facility only had the other vaccine stocked ie if they’d gotten moderna only pfizer was available, and if you’re taking time off work or if that’s the only place kinda close to you it would make it difficult to get that second dose
I also want to see statistics on how many people had to try several times to schedule that second appointment. For example, I scheduled my first vaccine in a city 60 miles away from my house, because that was the only place I could get it so I drove an hour and a half for it, but then I cancelled the second appointment and rebooked for one across the city from me, and then cancelled that one and rebooked for one down the street from me, because there were successively more appointments available at more desirable (for me) locations. And in my case, they were all within the same system so it was easy enough and I can assume the organization understood that I wasn’t skipping that dose– but I’ve seen other people complain that it was prohibitively confusing to change appointments in other systems.
So, I understand that people are upset at this statistic, but I would argue that there are mitigating factors.
Additionally, many people understand it to be that the first shot makes you half-immune and the second gets you the rest of the way there, but that’s not the case; for most people, that first shot makes you more like 85% immune. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot better than nothing, and in fact since fairly large numbers of people in my county got that first shot our infection rates have plummeted. No we’re not at herd immunity and it’s not over but it looks tentatively like we’ve broken the back of the mass transmission events.
