Jamie Parker, Scrippsy extraordinaire, shares his piece from the end-of-term concert from the History Boys, performing Chopin’s Polonaise no. 6 in A flat with John Cleese’s history of Oliver Cromwell.
God bless Sam Barnett.
ok y’all the thing is that the john cleese version of this is the only education i ever received about the english civil war and it turns out that’s directly the reason my ancestors were in the US after all (had some ironsides cavalry in the ol’ direct lineage it turns out, fucking roundheads) and honestly it’s fucking ridiculous that Americans aren’t taught any of this? but anyway I have never ever ever regretted getting this song stuck in my head because knowing Oliver Cromwell’s birth and death dates has proven to be incredibly useful at contextualizing a lot of history
except one time i went to a student recital and a lovely young lady performed Chopin’s Polonaise no. 6 in A flat all innocent and unaware and with great nuance and feeling and it was entirely wasted upon me and upon every Flying Circus fan in the audience, who spent the entire thing giggling.
