So the first 3 diagnosed/tested cases in my county were confirmed today. (They tested 36, and 3 came back positive.) Three different individuals from three different exposure vectors– one had been to Italy, one had been to Westchester Co., one had been “out of state” further unspecified. All three are young (20s/30s) people, being quarantined at home, two in the city and one in a first-ring suburb. So they’ve declared a state of emergency, and all schools are shut down until further notice.
The retail store where I work sent out a group text; we’d had a FB post on Friday saying we’d stay open, but.
I work in the online part, which is an upstairs office, semi-isolated from the retail area.
my plans, my meandering about what to do
I had been planning on working this week, and then going to the farm, until all this started getting out of hand. Now, online sales have fallen off steeply in the last week, and there’s not much for us to do, but we were then going to spend some time cleaning and photographing and listing used equipment online, so when people start shopping again, it’ll all be there.
But I don’t feel confident doing that– traveling seems like a poor idea. At the moment, I feel i can be confident I wasn’t exposed; I’ve been low-contact all week, and we hadn’t had any reputable reports of the virus being local.
But I don’t think I can keep going in to work and still maintain that. i’m going to have to assume I’ve been exposed at some point, if I keep going into a retail store. Unless the retail store closes, or if I go in during non-business hours.
At the farm, school is open Monday, but then after that will be shut down. Libraries are already closed. The state of emergency here (Erie Co) went into effect today at noon; in the county where the farm is (Rensselaer), it went into effect yesterday at noon.
New York City: 269 cases, 115 new
Westchester County: 178 cases, 20 new
Nassau County: 79 cases, 28 new
Albany County: 5 cases, 3 new
Dutchess County: 3 cases, 1 new
Erie County: 3 cases
Total: 613 total cases, up 187 from Saturday morning
So there are no confirmed cases in Renss. co, but I know my BFF’s mom is in quarantine there, because her social circle included one of the Albany county cases.
It’s not that I’d be safer either place. I wouldn’t be! I guess I’m not likely to be the vector that spreads it either place, either. IDK. It’s a lot to consider. And I’m not sure what to do.
I don’t want to leave my coworker alone here, as the only person in the online department, in case he falls ill and can’t work. But I also don’t want to be stuck here. I would be useful at the farm, and have things I could work on whether or not anyone got sick. Here, I’d be in Dude’s stuck-working-from-home hair, if I weren’t at work. Though, I could ostensibly get a lot of work done in our house if I were furloughed and/or quarantined.
I also want to be close to my family. I don’t know where my parents would be, I wish they were self-isolating but don’t know if they are. I want to be at the farm because then I can be useful and can care and be cared for. But I don’t want to leave Dude, who won’t leave here.
So. I’m a big mess of anxiety and indecision, is all. I *could* go in during non-work hours, and do a ton of work and get paid, and be there for my coworker should he have an emergency. Or I could go to the farm. I’m considering trying to get as much work done tomorrow and maybe the day after as possible, and then going to the farm, I just worry that it’s irresponsible to travel at all and maybe it’s already too late??

so we visited some friends this weekend, and as we were leaving, the dad was playing with his daughter’s hair. She’s five, and just the right height for him to reach, so he was absently finger-combing her cute lil mop of hair as he spoke to us.
“Daddy pways wif my hair,” she said to us, highly amused, “because he doesn’t have any of his own.”
(Her father has reasonably far-advanced male pattern baldness and so has his hair cropped quite short, and has had since before she was born.)
It was possibly the most cold-blooded murder I’ve ever witnessed. That kid is amazing.

I was down at the grocery store earlier and they were totally out of anything resembling disinfectant, so for anybody in the same situation stressing out about COVID-19 here’s a PSA.
I used to work in a microbiology lab that studied the kind of bacteria that can actually kill you, and had the whole rigmarole of “how to not accidentally cause a disease outbreak” training while I worked there. You know what the standard disinfectant is for wiping down a lab bench on which you’ve been working with actual tubes full of live pathogens?
1 part household bleach and 9 parts water in a plastic spray bottle.
If you’re the kind of person who cleans with bleach this is probably barely going to look like anything (because basically everyone who uses bleach to clean uses way more than they need to), but trust me, this is what scientists who make their living handling germs that can kill them consider an adequate amount of bleach to kill absolutely everything.
Just don’t use it immediately before or after other cleaners because bleach loves to react with things to make noxious gas.
P.S.: Plain old soap will also reliably kill coronavirus.
