I’m borderline afraid to admit that it’s 71 and sunny where I am. But April-October it is the Planet HellDeath that may have inspired Tatooine, so. There’s that.

I cannot conceive of it being warm anywhere in the world at the moment, but I am aware that there’s theoretically this whole other hemisphere where it’s summer, and also like, California exists apparently, or so it’s rumored. (I was there once but I’m still not convinced it was real.)

Oh man when I was real little my dad was in the National Guard and I know once he was at his annual training in Georgia and it was raining where we were, and I expressed to Mom that I was concerned about Dad having to Army in the rain, and she was like, sweetie, it’s probably not raining in Georgia, it’s far away. And she got out a map, bless her, and showed me where Georgia was, though I remember the name Georgia and remember the map as being more like… North Dakota… sans context, I was young enough that I was probably illiterate, but I got that Georgia was like, to the left and near Canada, which is you know, not where it is, so. Who knows what was actually going on. But I vividly remember that lesson, because before that I’d just, I guess, assumed that the world wasn’t that big.

“Thing was, I was worried, but I wasn’t scared.”

“So you were never scared?”

His father laughed softly. “I didn’t say that. I’m saying that what I was afraid of then isn’t what scares me now.”

“What’re you afraid of now?”

Poe watched his father raise his eyes from the fence and stare up into the dusk sky. The sun had almost slipped behind the gas giant, and in the last moments of daylight everything seemed oddly brighter, more sharply in focus.

“That it was all for nothing,” his father said.

Female pilots edited out of the Star Wars movies.

I saw the tweets about this today, and I was like oh yeah, I remember hearing about that.

And then I saw the pictures and just— wow. What it would have meant to have these women in the movie, all this time. I can’t properly articulate it but it’s hitting me unexpectedly hard.

Wow thats a shame, even a nice old lady too.  These Space Valkyries  should have been left in.

They really should have.

WHAT.

THE.

FUCK.

I lived, ate, and breathed Star Wars from age 2 until 2005 when RotS finally beat the enthusiasm out of me, and I have NEVER, EVER in all my reading on behind-the-scenes and makings-of heard of these shots. It’s a shame there was no relaunched edit of the original trilogy they could have slipped these in OH FUCKING WAIT THERE’S BEEN LIKE 3 OF THOSE NOW.

Fuck. FUCK. Whoever decided to edit out and bury these needs to french kiss an angle grinder.

I want to see the old lady in the A-Wing. Seriously, it’s like, she’s somebody’s grandma. Some kid in the Outer Rim Territories got greased by the Empire for seeing something she wasn’t supposed to see, and her grandma, the bush pilot, decided “Fuck this, I’m gonna strap on an fighter and make the Empire fucking PAY for the moment it decided to fuck with MY FAMILY.”

DON’T. MESS. WITH. GRANDMA.

These are quickly being put into the “always reblog” category.

Whenever there is a war, there are women who are warriors. Then they get erased from history. Happens in real wars and fictional ones alike.

Less than 5% of general aviation licenses go to women.  If these had been left in, you can bet that number would be higher.

^^^That knocked the breath out of me.

I just can’t believe they not only took them out, but refused to put them back in during the seventeen times they updated the movies. And of course the only possible explanation for this is: you do not belong here.

Representation matters. Now we just have to hope they learned that.

In your next story, write about one of the female pilots.

AND NOW CAN WE ALL GET TO TALK ABOUT FEMALE PILOTS

YOU KNOW WHICH ONES

REY THE FEMALE PILOT

JESSIKA THE FEMALE PILOT

whoa goddamn, my google doc entitled “this is dumb” of the Found Cat ‘verse AU When Kes Met Shara (circa 1976) is over 10k words on just the rewrite section of this. I guess i know where my time has gone.

I uh. It’s still not totally history-compliant, but at least I’ve tried. (Latest twist: if he’s a sergeant and she’s a lieutenant and they don’t have a pre-existing relationship, that’s fraternization and is Not Allowed under the US military code of conduct! Do I: #1 make him not a sergeant as he is in canon? she’s gotta be an officer if she’s a pilot, or #2 come up with a convoluted way to get him a career change to be an officer! Well, he’s got real good NCO vibes in the intro part, so, #2 it is.) (is this all incredibly dumb? Yes! there are other major issues with historical inaccuracy so it’s dumb to worry about this one but this one is solvable so i’m going to.)

Also: he’s totally going to give up his career so she can pursue hers. that’s exceptional for US 1970s culture, but it is the Kes Dameroniest thing I can think of.
