Dude is trying to get me to send my dad (who has a smartphone but is hopefully sleeping, in the hospital, not staring at it) the clip from Evil Dead where the guy chainsaws off his own possessed hand. I mentioned this to the family group text and middle-little sister said, “Too soon.”

i did it, i updated Home Out In The Wind, specifically the last story, which I’m finally remembering is called Never Wrote A Letter, and the secret is that I split that last chapter in half and then drank a bunch of vodka (h/t to @asajjventress for the white russians idea, I’d never have thought of that) until I didn’t care about the editing anymore!

it’s inventively titled Chapter 9 until I go back and put in the title, which will happen probably when I think of a title for the second half of it.

Chapter Nine, on AO3.

Summary:

Don’t tell me the Force doesn’t work like that because the Force does what it damn well pleases. Rey and Pava get to shoot at Kylo, BB-8 does some unexpected heroics, Leia becomes the unwitting fulcrum upon which the plot turns, and Poe, well. Poe and Kes have a pretty weird time. Bonus: Finn saves Poe.

I recommend tinyadventureclub here on tumblr who makes little badges like this. Mostly online but they just put up an etsy.

Hee! A friend and I have made things like this for one another out of felt– little merit badge-lookin’ things– but this one was very impromptu because I had a sharpie and was in the process of cutting angel wings and figurine feet out of a granola bar box with a pair of scissors.

I finally made stuff with papier-mache clay! that was my other achievement today, but since everything needs additional coats of clay I figured I’d wait on posting pictures. But. The stuff I made a week ago, is still good, and I used it before it went totally off, so, good for me.

I decided I should make myself a really inexplicable Nativity scene, because I couldn’t maintain motivation for any of my other ideas.

I see a lot of posts about people feeling embarrassed, like, about everything, all the time, being embarrassed is I guess a huge part of some people’s lives. well listen

my girlfriend left her shoes in the middle of the living room floor, so I hid them in the oven drawer. because I thought it was a drawer that you could like–store things in?? I don’t know, I somehow made it to this point in my life without knowing that the fire happens in there. then I forgot I’d done it, and like, two days went by.

so the next time we went to make dinner, the shoes caught on fire.

then the oven caught on fire

then our whole house was full of black smoke

then the NYC firefighters had to come out to our apartment. there were like six of them.

half the people in our building came out of their apartments to find out what was going on, and if they were going to die or if they needed to evacuate their cats or something

and then an actual, New-York’s-finest firefighter looked me wearily in the eyes and said “try not to keep shoes in your oven” as he left.

and now we need a new oven.

and I would say that I felt…mild embarrassment? I experienced a patina of chagrin. “whoops,” I thought to myself, as the firefighters tromped off and the firetruck drove off into the night. “I should probably have known that about oven drawers.” then I bought my girlfriend a new pair of shoes, since I’d burned her old shoes. then we ordered a pizza.

if I can not feel embarrassed about that, I hope you guys can take heart.

Serious question: What is an oven drawer?

I mean come on, it just looks like a drawer, right

Isn’t that where the pots and pans go?

I definitely remember pots and pans getting stored in the drawer of the oven we had when I was growing up. so I figured, okay, that’s a drawer for putting stuff in. key detail I guess: pots and pans are fireproof

unlike shoes

GUYS

THAT’S THE FUCKING BROILER

OH MY GOD

Not always the broiler actually. Sometimes it is just a drawer. My aunt keeps snack foods in there (Oreos, Cheetos, the shit she doesn’t want people to know she eats) and her oven has never caught on fire.

So this is handy information for me to start inspecting the oven of every place I ever move into from now until eternity.

fair enough but i feel like if shoes go in and fire comes out it’s probably the broiler

Oh thank god it’s sometimes a drawer. I thought I had a broiler for years and never used it.

So there’s a compartment that SOMETIMES is extra storage and SOMETIMES is full of fire?

Yep, basically.

HANG ON. I’m used to ones with grillers (broilers, i guess? I’m not in the US) in a slot at the TOP, with a pop-down door, instead of a drawer. However, the most important part of the griller is that it DOESN’T TURN ON unless you turn on the griller! is that not the case with broiler drawers? Is OP just turning on all the nobs on the oven in the hope of making foods?Secondly: aren’t the drawer kind supposed to be warming drawers? For heating plates and/or proofing bread?

The under-the-oven broilers use the same heating element as the oven. So whether you’ve turned the broiler on or not, there’s fire up there. Broiler is a setting on the regular oven knob, not its own separate button.

If I can get my hands on them, that’s what everyone is getting for Christmas… whether they have dogs or not.

I was tagged by @la-tarasque to “post my aesthetic in pictures from my phone”, which is an interesting constraint. So, here’s me looking for pictures saved to my phone to find ones that reflect an aesthetic I enjoy, I guess. Hmm!

I don’t often take aesthetic pictures on my phone, they’re almost always documentary in nature, so it’s interesting to try to consider them that way. Sometimes, like the stairwell picture, they’re a testament to the limitations of a camera with no controls and a tiny sensor. (That’s a portrait of my father, painting the front door. Can you see him? Probably not.)

I seem to like a lot of blues and dark reds, and I am inordinately fond of trying to mess with my camera by including a light source in the frame.

I really ought to get the photos off my camera from the last, like, five visits to the farm, and recharge that battery….

Tagging, hmm… @heartofoshun, @vulgarweed, @shaebay, @wyomingnot, @torrilin, @buttons-beads-lace, @this-is-furious, and anyone else who sees this and thinks they might have interesting stuff saved to their phone.

I kind of cheated I guess? because everything I save to my phone gets auto-uploaded to Dropbox so I can access it from my computer, because #1 I don’t know how to make photo posts from my phone and #2 I am always paranoid I’ll lose my phone.

Here’s the kind of media fan I am: I hadn’t watched any of the trailers for the upcoming Rogue One except the first trailer, which I saw in the movie theater while I was seeing the only other movie I saw this year besides Ep VII. The reason for this is solely that I don’t like to watch videos; gifsets are about the best thing to ever happen to me.

But I did watch the trailers, this morning, and for one reason and one reason alone:

Diego Luna’s accent, or lack thereof.

I hadn’t watched any interviews with him either, nor had I seen any movies he was in (I’ve mentioned this elsewhere: I watch like, three movies a year, and have been like that my whole life, so, it’s not hard for me to miss entire genres etc) but one gifset of an interview with Luna was subtitled in such a way that made it clear that he was speaking non-totally-fluent English. So I watched an interview and, sure enough, Diego Luna speaks excellent but not perfect English, with a strong accent.

So I watched the trailers. And, indeed, Cassian Andor speaks with Diego Luna’s approximate accent. (I’m sure he’s been dialect-coached; nothing in a movie of that budget is going to be laziness or coincidence or left to chance, but they clearly didn’t try to get rid of his accent entirely. From that standpoint, I imagine they cast him on purpose for that reason. The actor’s accent was a feature, not a defect, in the impression they wanted to convey.) And what’s more, he is not the only character to have a noticeable accent.

What does this mean?

Well, it means a lot for Space Latinos. It means a lot. It means they’re implying the existence of cultures speaking other languages in-universe. It means they’re overtly claiming multiculturalism for the side of the Rebellion. Which, of course, if you look at the rest of the cast, most of whose names I don’t even know yet because I’m not that kind of fan, but– clearly, that’s an aesthetic they’re deliberately shooting for. And that’s really something exciting on its own. Let’s hope we can get more than a just superficial, cosmetic idea of “diversity” from this– I want deeper worldbuilding, there, of what it means that these people are so visibly and audibly differentiated.

(What I wouldn’t have given for a woman of color, or shit, more than one woman period, but we’ll wait and see I guess.)

So. In general, I’m excited to see the movie, but in specific, I want to know what this means for Space Latinos, and opportunities for me to expand the Lost Kings-verse into that canon.

It’s almost scary, because if they world-build something that doesn’t fit with what I’ve done, I’ll be pretty bummed– but I can’t see how they would.

At any rate– Lost Kings is sort of on hiatus until then, but it’s a natural stopping point anyway, and I am only a little bit cautious in my optimism that I’ll be able to fold it into something really cool with what we get from the source material.

I just. I had to catalogue this Epic Nap. The two of them. Reverse-chronological order from top left. Her head is upside-down in the current one. He is trapped and may starve to death, but at least he’ll be well-rested.
