omg spiders. If necessary for my mental health, I carefully remove wolf spiders from My Area, but I very much want to like them because they kill other problem bugs so I don’t have to. And I kinda like jumping spiders? One time, I woke up 2 nights in a row to a spider zipping across my foot, and the third night I was laying in bed reading and saw it cruising up the wall and was like, “YOU!” and it kind of paused guiltily and then scurried off and I never saw it again.

Yeah, Lady Wolf Spider seems to have gotten the message and is not back in my bed tonight, which is good. Either that or Whiskey the cat ate her.

My sister firmly believed that Whiskey was not much of a hunter, but since I started sleeping out here last year she’s brought me several things, including alarmingly large rodents, so clearly she is. A wolf spider is well within her capabilities.

Jumping spiders are actually cute, because they are tiny and more weird than creepy. I still don’t want them on or near me, but that’s more that I’m terrified of crushing them than anything else.

3:30 am. Fell asleep before 9. Air mattress has slow leak. 50 degrees out. Had weird dream I carjacked a middle-aged Korean man in a vintage pickup truck and forced him to drive me to the Toronto Ikea whereupon I realized I had no reason to do that, so I followed him around awkwardly and he, at a loss, took me home to his family (a white Canadian lady and two middle-school kids), and I spent the rest of the dream trying to figure out how to get home preferably without telling my dude what had happened.

I also dreamed somewhere in there that I was in some scenario where o had to share a king size bed with three other people, work acquaintances. It was awkward.
Why. Why? This air mattress is so flat and the yurt is so cold and I can only dream of awkward things. It’s not fair.
At least that was like. Five ish solid ish hours of sleep, which I needed.

I should, at some point tomorrow, go to the nearest home depot and buy enough additional Reflectix that I can fully insulate the yurt with it.

Pros: easy enough to do, it’s not that expensive.

Cons: One more thing to take down when I take down the yurt.

HOWEVER, the stuff weighs nothing, it’s bubble wrap only more rigid, and mice are disinterested in it, so actually it’s a superior solution to quilted linings, and anyway I should have that rigid radiant barrier between the canvas and the quilting because it’s also a moisture barrier and it’ll keep the quilting from getting damp.

Yeah… I should do that.

Yesterday B-I-L got a text from his mother. “I’m on my way,” she wrote. She had planned to visit in summer sometime. Summer spooled out, no visit. He gave her a list of weeks when my folks wouldn’t be around, when I wouldn’t be around, times they could really use an extra set of hands. No visit. Most recently, he’d asked if she could come last week, since my mother and father’d be out of town and so they were a little short on child care. She’d said she might not be able to make it but she’d be there by the weekend probably.

Well, this is another part of the reason I got the yurt. Doesn’t matter if she shows up while I’m still here. It takes her two days to arrive, so at least they have that notice when she shows up. Sometimes she doesn’t text right when she leaves, though, so they get a text like, “I’m in Ohio!” and BIL has to be like, “why are you in Ohio”. There was one occasion where he was like “well it’s nice that you’re in Ohio but I’m in South Carolina so I hope you’re not in Ohio on your way to visit me, because I’m not there, like I told you I wasn’t going to be.”

Awkwardly, there’s a Big Fancy Shindig on Thursday night that they’re going to with mom and dad and I’d agreed to stay home and watch the baby. Presumably, her other grandmother will be wanting to spend time with her that night, so– I said no worries, I’d find something to do– like maybe go to Home Depot in Rensselaer and pick up some insulation– but they’re trying to see if I can still get a ticket to Fancy Dinner. I’m sort of like… can we see the whites of Nana’s eyes first, make sure she’s actually going to show up, before we make any arrangements? but anyway.

At least I brought a dress to wear; I’ve started always packing one on speculation now. You Never Know when you’re going to be required to look presentable.

Oh I don’t think I have any presentable shoes. Welp!

When I woke up with a flat air mattress at 3 am and it was 49 degrees out, it was the perfect time to test out the kerosene heater, unused since last year. Pleased to report that it works perfectly, still!

I took this photo to commemorate the beauty of this cornbread in the knowledge that I forgot to grease the skillet and so would have to destroy it to remove it, but it turns out the skillet was well-seasoned enough that it came out just fine! Anyway, it’s good cornbread. Joy of Cooking recipe, with honey in sugar’s stead and an extra egg since I had them to hand. (I just finished washing eggs, and some of them were still nearly hen body temperature from the recentness of collecting!)

Re-posting this art by Magali Villeneuve for my book Star Wars: Razor’s Edge, which is coming out in paperback on October 28.

This is an old post from 2014 that popped up in my Facebook memories, but the art isn’t showing up there, so I thought I’d reblog it here. This is some of my favorite extra art for a book. The character is Sian Tesar, an Alliance X-wing pilot, an original character I came up with for Razor’s Edge.
