Home Out In The Wind has about 60k words and will be updated once weekly, twice weekly if I’m really optimistic, and then the as yet unnamed, but almost entirely complete sequel (it’s done start to end but there are two crucial scenes at not quite the end that literally consist of [Conclude Arc A Here] and [Resolve Thing B Here], which is about one afternoon of solid writing if I’m motivated) will begin posting immediately on a similar schedule.

I firmly plan to update weekly on Wednesdays barring catastrophe or just insurmountable logistics, but then I think about how long 9 weeks is and don’t want it to take that long, LOL. I don’t know how many chapters the rest is, but it’s another 90k words, so. It may vary but it’ll be at least one a week.

I’ve written fics this long but I always wind up with it all complete but the last 5k words, or some dumb bullshit like that, so this was an exercise in self-discipline, to write the whole thing first. It was really hard, but it’s about a thousand times better because I did. (Kes wasn’t a character until about the last 10k words, initially; the whole holonovelas idea only showed up about 100k words into it and then came out of nowhere and was oddly pasted in. Shit like that. Arana wasn’t really a speaking character until the final-final revisions, when I added the first 5k words of the story. That kind of thing.)

So it’s not that it’s so monumental, but there are inescapable logistics, and also I just couldn’t wait any longer to post it, i had to give myself permission to start once the last chapter was written because otherwise i was going to drown in the waiting. But I wanted to finish it so I’d be able to figure out what it was about, and avoid the fate of my other WIPs that are languishing. (I’ll finish them soon! I will! she cries into the night, pretty much constantly.)

I am continually amazed by the new stuff I can discover in successive re-edits of this story. I am clearly not a habitual editor; I post stuff raw all the time, and that’s for good reasons, but maybe I’m getting better at it? I don’t know.

Used to be that editing meant I successively discarded entire passages and wound up with Byzantine collections of matroyshka-doll drafts, overlapping but incoherent. Now I’m doing better, I think, at taking a framework and staying within it.

I might be speaking too quickly here. Who knows what’s next, it still has plenty of time to become absolutely nightmarish. … Also I still have the same problem I always have, where nothing gets deleted and stuff only gets added on.

Latest addition, which I haven’t quite placed yet:

Finn turned to Statura and couldn’t help but smile, a little, because Statura looked dumbfounded and the crowd behind him was starting to stir into a murmur of shocked, astonished excitement. He was good at this, was the thing, and he’d spent so long trying not to be too showy about it lest he stand out too much that it was kind of nice to get to just show off.

The audience was getting louder, and some of them had started to cheer. Finn let himself grin broadly, and turned to look at them. It was a big assortment of people; the logistics people he’d hung out with, some of the pilots, but a lot of the ground troops he hadn’t met yet.

“What?” Finn asked, feigning innocence. He put a hand on his hip, still holding the blaster in his other hand, pointed at the ground. “Did someone tell you Stormtroopers couldn’t shoot, or something?”

Over on the AO3 galacticproportions coined the phrase “space microaggressions” to discuss a scene where Poe is inwardly rolling his eyes at someone who is being a dick about his ethnicity while outwardly being nice because it’s a coworker he has to go to for favors, and it’s the most brilliant phrase and I’m in love with it.

Space Microaggressions.

I looked them up and was like someone this witty, I must read everything you have ever written and oh. I read your only posted series yesterday already. GUH. (Okay, I read part 1 and was saving part 2 for today. It is Finn-centric, which I haven’t seen as much of as I’d like to, and SUPER SAD and now I’m running late for work shit shit shit)

You can reply to replies on regular Tumblr now.

It just doesn’t notify the person you’re replying to. So it’s like void-howling. It’s pointless. They’re so smug about having added this functionality? And it’s useless, because it’s not a conversation.

You can’t even cheat it by going straight to the post you replied on and checking there to see if anyone replied to your reply, because, wait for it, this is the stupidest fucking thing: REPLIES DON’T SHOW ON THE INDIVIDUAL POST PAGE. Nope! You can only see them if you view the post on your dashboard.

IT IS SO STUPID.
