Spent this past weekend in Melrose with the parents. Older Sister was taking the train up from Savannah with the two nephews, who are 2 and a half and 10 months respectively. None of us sisters had ever met the 10-month-old, because Savannah Georgia is just too far away... from Buffalo, Colorado, and Illinois. The oldest sister isn't the furthest from home.
For a while I was the furthest. Well, excepting Oldest, who was in Iraq at the time. She's been farther than she is.
We used to be close. We're the closest in age of all the Kelly sisters. But she's been off with the Army since '99, really-- she did ROTC in college, and every summer they had her off jumping out of planes or whatever.
Now motherhood is absolutely full-time for her. She's as totally committed to it as she has been to everything she's done. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing full-bore all the time. I don't think she knows how to half-ass something. Not that half-assing is really an option in motherhood. But two seems like a lot-- they're both still at very needy ages. The older one is clever and attentive, and speaks very clearly and understands a lot. I realized that if he doesn't understand what you said, he'll repeat it back, very solemnly. If he hears a phrase he likes, he'll do the same, and then re-use it at some future date. (His father delights in this, which is why the 2-year-old's speech includes concepts like "hoo-hoo" for female genitalia, and a delighted interest in "Boobies!") He looks older than he is, because he's tall and thin without the still-typical at that age 'baby belly', and his speech is clear. But when it comes time for bed, he's very very two. And sharing toys with his baby brother, who is fascinated by everything he does, is not really something that works out well.
At any rate. I'm just killing a couple minutes before work and this is getting too long already. I took a zillion great pictures this weekend-- well, OK, about a dozen great pictures, and a zillion-minus-a-dozen ones that I'm infatuated with though they're really not all that great. I am trying to learn to use Lightroom, my birthday gift from Z (he also got me a fantastic necklace I'd admired then given up on at Pennsic), so I don't yet know how to post them, but I'll put them up eventually. Possibly today?
