Special Breakfast Time
Jan. 16th, 2009 09:46 amSo yesterday I was on TV. My teammate, Dawn, is the media coordinator person, and landed us this appearance on A.M. Buffalo, a local morning show. She was told she could have up to three girls, but could only find one other person to do it, so she asked me, last-minute, if I could. I agreed, a bit reluctantly. See, I was head of PR for 2 years. I always was there when the cameras were, for the most part, but if I couldn't find someone more picturesque to be on them, I would talk to them myself. And they invariably found a way to edit me out.
I never was upset by this, but I did get something of a complex-- they must've edited me out for a reason, right? Obviously, I do Not Do Well on TV cameras! So I didn't really want to be there, but Dawn asked me to and I had no real reason not to.
So I showed up, and they said oh, you're not on our list, we can't get you on. Fine! I said brightly, but Dawn was upset. So they hemmed and hawed, and finally, as the other two were taking their seats on the couch, they handed me a microphone and had me sit there too.
Crikey!
So I sat there, and tried to think of witty things to say. Then she asked my leaguemates about their jobs. Crap! I thought. Crap! Crap! What do I say? I'm an unemployed slob! Crap! Crap! I hadn't gotten beyond that by the time she asked me what I did. Great. So I fumbled around.
Oh well. My posture is awful, and I noticed that I was fidgeting my hands and tried not to, but didn't realize what I was doing with my feet. Awkward!
But it wasn't about me, and most of the segment was showing B-reel of the bout, which was awesome footage!! Our official league highlight reel gave the distinct impression that all the KOs did in that bout was get hit a lot, but the Channel 7 cameraman's footage had an awful lot of KOs making awesome plays, which is an odd coincidence. But anyway. It was great to see, since the only footage we all have access to is the blurry, distant birds-eye camera, from which you can't see anything. The highlight reel didn't show any of these plays so we hadn't seen them before. So it was great to see.
Anyway-- the video is here, if anyone wants to see it. (Edit: including the link would probably help.)
The whole way home I was thinking of cool things I could've said when she asked my job. "Unmarried housewife" would be the funniest. I thought about blurting out something like "Lion tamer!" I also thought of saying "Webcam girl" or "Oh, I pose nude on the Internet." But I suppose I'm glad I didn't have a chance to get too witty.
In other news it is ass-biting cold out there. Brr. I wore long underwear for that TV appearance-- no lie. That under the red fishnets is not a pair of spandex stockings, but instead is 100% silk pointelle Lands End long underwear, and a thick pair of 100% wool socks. I was not about to freeze my ass off just to look cute.
I didn't get around to making insulated curtains for the kitchen or living room, but I got some old ones from my parents (Dad was using them for drop-cloths) with the intention of using them in the attic, and I safety-pinned them up in the kitchen last night to try and control the cold coming straight through the glass. They're hideous curtains, cream with yellow and green and pink flowers in a bold early-80s pattern. I remember them, dimly, from my parents' room when I was a child. But they seem to have helped a great deal in keeping the house a little less cold. At least the heat's been on not quite constantly, which means something's retaining some heat somewhere...
On the way home from the TV appearance I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things. On impulse I bought two doughnuts from the bakery section. I put them on the sideboard at home and promptly forgot about them, until this morning when I was making the coffee. So it was a delightful little surprise, and having a Special Breakfast generally makes my day. I'm very cheerful now and am thinking that I'll have a really productive day today-- I have more updates to make about that linen dress, I'm done except for putting on the sleeves and adding the facings along the neckline and front opening, and then the Epic Saga of Hand-Bound Eyelets which I'm actually really good at, though I am thinking of taking more care with these and using embroidery floss so they're prettier... which means that if I'm going to overdye the dress I've got to do that first...
I also have to go through the QCRG website with a fine-toothed comb and update the copy, because it's never really been updated and needs to be. (Some of the text still talks about it being a startup league etc. Um, it's our third year. And only one of the three founders is even still skating. So maybe, uh, yeah.)
But I'm very pumped-up, thanks to inhuman levels of blood sugar from the completely impractical donut I chose for myself yesterday and surprised myself with today. Let the weather stay cold and bitter! I am a caffeinated fiend of productivity!
And oh yes, I washed my pads for roller derby, including-- get this-- my helmet. People won't recognize me because I won't smell like myself anymore!!!
