We made it from Cortland to Buffalo-- arrived around 11:45 pm. Stopped at the Seneca rest stop, got coffee, checked on the cat. I sat in Fi's car while she went in and got coffees, and Remi came out, wide-eyed, and sat on my shoulders. A truck pulled up next to us, with a family with a dog. Remi saw this and quietly went back into the cat carrier. After a few moments she came out and sat in my lap. I petted her and she purred, though probably more of her innate survival instinct for Be Cute And They Won't Eat You than of any real pleasure.
She went willingly back into the carrier for the rest of the ride, and we got her into the house, put her in the bedroom, and shut the door. She hid under the bed. Chita got into the room briefly, but did not discover her, and we shut her out again.
Chita is mad to have a door closed to her. We never close doors! This makes her mad.
Remi is intimidated by everything, but is venturing out more and more. Whenever Chita goes out for a long time, we'll shut the door so she can't get back in, and open the bedroom door so Remi can explore a little. Until Chita comes and finds the door shut and indignantly yowls to be let in, so we shoo Remi back into the bedroom (where she hides under the bed) and let Chita back in.

Unpacked the cars. Two four-door sedan-loads (compact Japanese cars have roomier trunks than you'd think) full of things, whatever I could pack easily, and Fi's closet is full, and she's put some things into her dresser, and I've done a load of laundry for her that's hanging idyllically on the line, etc. etc. Chita has been suspicious and annoyed about the door being shut, but at the moment is snoozing peacefully in her current favorite chair in the living room.
Remi has been coaxed out from under the bed, and has explored the porch briefly, peeking out of the windows with interest (she has spent her life in a second-floor apartment, so ground-level screens are a novelty) and rubbing up against my and Fi's legs. But she runs back under the bed if there's any sound, and hides in the far corner under the bed. She likes to sit in the closet, as well. We might set up a box there for her, as it's preferable to under the bed.

I figure we'll leave things as they are for at least a week. Fi will probably come up next weekend, with more things and for a visit, and we'll try new things then. We'll see how the cats cope. Chita is not terribly alert to Remi's scent; she's sniffed a few items of Fi's laundry with some interest, but hasn't picked up on Remi under the door or on the porch. (We had the bedroom closed off and the porch open while we unloaded the cars, and Chita explored the porch but didn't notice Remi's litterbox.)

Anyway. Off to have ice cream for lunch, as we're big fans of health food.
There's a football game going on at the high school across the street. It is so stupidly loud. I hate football so much. Maybe Fi will help me realize my intention to sit on the front porch with big 40s of cheap beer and heckle the football game as it goes on. I keep meaning to and never do.

So. So far, so OK. Time for ice cream.
