i forgot to mention
Jan. 9th, 2008 10:53 amDid I even mention that Liesl and Dave came out to see the roller derby bout? Dave was my roommate in college-- I met him the first week of freshman year, lying drunk on the floor. "How much has he had?" I asked incredulously.
"Two beers," he answered faintly.
He went on to go to med school, and is now in his third or fourth year of residency at Strong Memorial. He's going into anaesthesiology, I believe. But, of course, he's had to study all kinds of medicine, so he's generally fairly knowledgeable.
Liesl, his girlfriend, I've known since sophomore year of high school. She was a year behind me at Emma. I introduced the two of them, which I suppose I'm rather proud of, despite that sort of thing not being my specialty or even really in my skillset. ;)
Anyhow, Dave being medical and all, I asked him about knees, and said I was a bit worried I'd done something to mine, perhaps a torn meniscus. He said the thing with menisci is that they can't really do anything about them. I asked about the surgery I know Mia had, and he shook his head. "All they do," he said, "is trim off the torn part to reduce the excess gunk impeding the motion of your knee. But that doesn't really fix anything, it just makes it usable again."
So yeah, medicine is a bit overrated. It's a hard lesson for some of us to learn, that medicine can't actually fix all the damage we do ourselves. I always used to just sort of believe that no matter what it was, if you went to a good enough doctor they'd fix it. But that's not at all the case. Sometimes, you just have to deal with it. I knew that, but I don't always know that.
However, he freely admits that he doesn't do knees, so maybe I'm wrong to take that to mean that it's fine that I never saw a doctor about mine. Ha ha!
