a thorny matter of etiquette
Jun. 9th, 2007 09:50 amSo one of my teammates has just had the Week from Hell. She'd mentioned early last week that her allergies were giving her hell, as is inevitable for her this time of year. But Sunday she showed up for practice with such a bad chest infection that she grew winded when she tried to speak, and it hurt her to breathe. She skated for about an hour before we convinced her to go to the damn hospital, which she did. She was treated and released, but the next day was admitted with pneumonia.
She was in the hospital until Wednesday, and said she would be recovered enough to attend practice on Thursday, though only to watch, not to skate.
But she wasn't there Thursday, which is unlike her. (She had begged the nurse on Tuesday to let her go to practice. "My IV drips are on wheels! I can wheel them around with me as I skate!" One assumes she was kidding, but her frustration was undoubtedly real.*)
This morning she sent out an email informing the group that her wedding, which is in a month, has been called off.
I can't even imagine how the poor girl is feeling.
But, on to the thorny etiquette problem, and if Sissy is reading this (I really don't think she does, but), she had better not go further, because it's still a secret.
( What to do? )
________
* I have a side point I want to make. There is an article or something brewing in my brain about the many of my team- and league-mates who use roller derby as either psychological, emotional, or physical therapy. ( and I go on about that... )
In other news, went out with old work friends last night for one's birthday. Was nice to see the two or three people I still care about from there, though a few I would like to keep up with didn't show. I feel very distant from all that already, which is weird.
But then I came home and poor Z had been sick while I was gone, shivering and feverish and spacy. He's not well today either, grumpy and unsteady and lethargic. (So, normal then? No, just kidding.)
I'm better-- started taking a Wegman's generic cough syrup whose sole active ingredient is guanafenesin (sp?), an expectorant and mucous thinner, which means that the awful coughs I have are at least productive, and mostly don't happen. I took Sudafed a few days this week and got all spacy, so I'm hoping to avoid more of that. Although, it was effective at clearing things out. So maybe I'm almost done, or maybe I've just medicated the symptoms into submission: either way, I can talk and breathe, and even sing a little, so I'm not complaining. Much.
