The world is a little less mysterious/mythical, but I do not find that to be unduly depressing. In fact it is better, as not one but two tiny things that had perplexed me so minutely that I was not aware of perplexity have been laid to rest.
One is Auntie's mythical daughter. She has four children, Z's cousins, all much older than Z. I know the two older children very well-- both are single, around 40, and deeply fascinating women, spiky and sarcastic and glitteringly unique in that odd way the women of Z's mother's family are. One is an accountant so 'boring' as to be fascinating; the other is now a lawyer after a zillion career changes; both live alone in fabulous apartments in the heart of major cities (one on Manhattan, the other downtown Philly).
But there is a third daughter, who lives in San Francisco and is very mysterious. I met her briefly last summer, but I actually got to speak to her yesterday, which was interesting. She is quieter and less glamorous than the two older sisters, and seems less sharp, but given a conversation in which to unfold, she proves to be every bit as perplexingly abrasive (I do not mean that in a bad way, although it's bad to some people) and profoundly interesting as the other two.

The other tiny mystery was cleared up when she proclaimed that she had never bothered sampling any of the trendy drinks around today. "I just discovered the gin rickey and stayed there," she said.

I have never known what a gin rickey was, and it had always been very slightly bothersome to me. Being a bartender, it is a tiny point of pride that I know my way around The Classic Drinks and many of the Trendy ones as well, and it had never bothered me enough to look it up, but I didn't know what a gin rickey was.

Turns out I make them all the time. It's gin and soda and some lime.

Far from finding that disappointing, I find that elating. I am going to order gin rickies now. It is going to increase my retro chic, just you watch it.

(Secretly I am slightly disappointed that I do not have retro chic looks. I don't-- my hair won't hold a wave and looks awful in bangs; I am too pale in coloring to look like anything but a pile of mashed potatoes in photos; I am just not a pinup girl no matter how I try. Oh well.)

Other than that I am trying to organize an excursion to Polonia this evening for the Dyngus Day celebrations, but am hampered by my utter lack of knowledge of either the holiday or the neighborhood. Hm.
