thriller!

You know how a-capella music was like way cool for a while, and then got severely untrendy?
I thought I'd kind of gotten over the whole fad (I was in two a capella choirs, I'll have you know: I did the bum-ba-bum part for Jackson 5's "Want You Back", for the curious, and the aah-ahh's for "Son of a Preacher Man"), but then, well, but this is so awesome. I'm going to see them live on Saturday night down at Soundlab. I guess Petra Haden's hipster credentials are immaculate. And that is the best cover of Thriller I've ever heard. Holy cow dude. (Although as Z's buddy Corey put it, "The whole thing is just a warmup for the Vincent Price bit.")

Apparently the whole thing started when the bassist in a band she was in said, "Hey, you're a good vocal arranger. Somebody ought to do The Who's Sell Out a capella. I bet you could." And she did, in eight tracks. But now she has an all-girl choir and they do it live.

So anyway. I've never been a huge Who fan, more out of apathy in general than because I dislike them. But that, I'll go see. And also, it's $3 off admission with a costume, and my pirate-girl duds need an airing.

Unfortunately I've been a bit of an idiot: two coworkers separately asked if I'd switch shifts with them, and I agreed like an idiot, because I remember how much it sucked not to be able to get days off. So this Saturday I have to work 11-7 instead of 9-3, bah, and next Sunday I'm there 2 to probably midnight on my day off, bleagh.
Further inconvenience is that the second monthly league meeting of rollergirls is that Sunday at 11, which means that my plan of switching it up and going in the Club that day has a spanner in the works-- the Club is at noon. Urgh! I'm going to have to actually close Landmark. Suck!
More money, but I sort of don't need money right now, I need time. Bah.

I did have an excellent idea at work, with the result that I now think I have an actual novel to work on for November. It's pretty definitely a contemporary fantasy. I don't know what would make it count as a paranormal, and i haven't really decided whether it'll be a romance, as I haven't quite nailed down whether the one male protagonist has a body at all, and the other one, well, the secondary female character who is his counterpart is pretty definitely a middle-aged lesbian, and I just don't feel like having her switch teams.
Maybe the middle-aged lesbian and the twentysomething pornstar ingenue main character could be the romantic pair? Only, well, it's complicated. I don't think so. If I want any nookie other than the random, I'll have to give the male lead an actual physical body, which, as I said, I don't know about. (I suppose it depends on whether he's dead.)

I know I'm just rambling annoyingly, but I'm at the stage where I think it's all a Good Idea. Now I know that's really important in the creative process, but I also know, from the other end, how annoying it is to deal with someone in the This Is The Greatest Idea Ever stage.

I am going to take a moment right now to mention that my new iTunes library is a simultaneous blessing and curse. On the one hand I'm freed from the expectations of my old playcount stats, but on the other hand I'm completely bereft of that frame of reference. I have six thousand songs to get through and they're all starting at zero, and I just... I can't explain that either.
Well, this post is kind of a bust, but at least I linked you to an awesome cover of Thriller by an all-girl a capella choir, so you can't unfriend me for that. (Can you? Unless it gets stuck in your head.)

Also I don't mean to waste your time pretending I have any kind of consideration for my audience, because if I did, you'd all have noticed before now, probably. But I'm so giddy over being in the Greatest Idea Ever stage it's hard for me to think straight.
