An old family friend put this up on Facebook a while ago to commemorate the birthday of my youngest sister, the one in the christening gown, and my other little sister just re-shared it.
It must be 1985, because I am wearing a paper hat probably related to my kindergarten graduation, and it must be May because the baby was born in April. (The baby… whose two-year-old daughter now frequently adorns this online space.)
I am suddenly possessed with a desire to find a dress exactly like that only in my current size. Look at those knees! I am certain I had not yet ever been self-conscious about them. Would I wear a dress that short without tights now? No.
Both of my grandmothers, in one photo, and we’re bracketed by my father’s youngest sister in back on the left, and my mother’s only brother in back on the right.
My mother supposes she’s making that awful face because my little sister is probably kicking her, as that sort of thing happened a lot.
There are so many of us. What a big family. Grandma K was rarely around, though, she lived in Florida. Three of the people in this photo are deceased now. You’d expect the little old ladies to go first, and one did, but not the other.
In the center, my older sister, with the dark hair, has exactly the same expression as her second son has now in every photo of him. He is that age, just now. Normally I don’t think he resembles her, but this photo of her could be him.
What a strange thing time is, and genetics, and the echoes of people rippling down the years in strange reminiscent patterns. I have no particular point to make here, I just saw the photo again. Facebook is good for something.
