Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] buschibaby, for that nice sense of perspective. You must be due soon, right? I have heard tell that the entire point of the last trimester of pregnancy is to be so profoundly unpleasant as to completely outweigh the woman's terror of actually giving birth.
So anyway. No matter how deeply my life may suck, at least I'm not pregnant. Not that there was any danger of this, but really. (People do keep insisting on posting photos of their ridiculously adorable children, and my body is coming up on its 29th birthday, and sometimes hormones poke me unpleasantly.) Also one of my teammates ended a conversation today with "Whoops, gotta go take care of some poop," and I said, "... Human?" and she said, "Child," and I said, "I freakin' love my life." The freedom from responsibility for the poop of others is an underappreciated one.

Anyhow.

I mustered up the guts today to change the needle on my sewing machine (thank you, [livejournal.com profile] jonquil, it really was that easy!), and finished sewing the seam that had ended so precipitously with my new body piercing. The injury, incidentally, hurts precisely as much as it ought to, which is novel and interesting. It doesn't hurt a lot, it just feels like, well, a sharp bit of metal went through it. Which is kind of refreshing-- things usually hurt way too much or unnervingly far too little, in my experience. I admit I kind of like knowing that my finger seems to be working precisely as I'd expect.

So I sewed the rest of the seam, added in side gores and made it into a shortish shift instead of an apron. I just have to do arm straps. It's not very period, but I don't care. It's a re-use of bits of fabric from an even farbier shift. I just need more shifts. And I've spent precisely 45 minutes on it so far, not counting the 2 days I lost by injuring myself.

I figure I need 2 or 3 more shifts, and at least a 3rd dress, but preferably a fourth one. I have two skirts and some iffy corsets I can wear if nobody's paying attention too hard, so that would make six outfits, and that's OK. But then I need to make that overdress from the polyester fake wool I bought for cold weather, so I have something to put on if it's brutally cold. Which it may well be.

At least I finished binding the eyelets for the closure on the blue kirtle, almost, while in the waiting room at the auto shop today. I also started cutting out the skirt for it. I cannot bring myself to line the skirt. I just can't. I'll wear it with a shift or a petticoat. It's coarsely-woven cotton, and very light, and a bit floaty, but I can't make myself line it even though it's really not period not to. The bodice is lined and interlined in muslin with cording sandwiched in, so it's substantial up top, but of course not substantial enough to go without something. If a petticoat doesn't do the trick I'll break down and add a lining in later, but if I can't even face trying it on in this heat, there's just no way I'll be able to wear it at Pennsic.

It's so beastly hot I may have to seek air conditioning tomorrow. I just can't keep losing hours of the day to this heat. Z will be going into the office tomorrow, so I'll be on my own. Me and the cat. Chita spent hours lying on the floor today, occasionally raising a very heavy eyelid to regard me with disillusionment. She doesn't remember it being this hot last year. I'm not sure she's got that much long-term memory.

I know it's not even 90, but here in Buffalo, that's what we consider beastly hot. Anything over 80 is grounds for complaining. We don't have A/C because it's never been necessary in this climate... But Z's mom does, so maybe we'll go there tomorrow.
