dragonlady7One of my coworkers is a big fan of the original Conan the Barbarian movie. He kept telling me I should watch it, more emphatically than most people tell me I should watch most things (I don't have a working DVD player in my house, haven't owned a TV in a decade now; people get downright offended when I haven't seen the moving picture they favor, be it TV or movies).
So I did last night; we're visiting friends and they like to watch movies and have a nice home theater system.
It's just as he said-- the acting is not particularly good (and downright terrible in some places), and the special effects cheesy as hell, but the characters are surely drawn and it's a great story. The plot is pretty darn good, really. And a lot of the visuals are well-executed. It's certainly a cheesefest, and don't go in it looking for phenomenal insights into the human condition, but it's definitely held up, and the score remains absolutely stunning. There's almost no dialogue, but the music is a character unto itself. They worked very well with the limitations they had. My coworker was right-- it was a movie worth seeing.
Of course, the opening line, "Let me tell you of the days of high adventure," well, it got quoted before we saw the movie (I forget who said it or why), and immediately got transformed into "Let me tell you of the Daves of high adventure," so now we're discussing moving on from the House of Daves and having the two Daves be The Daves Of High Adventure instead. It makes more sense now that we've seen the movie.
Then we watched Tron, which was interesting, certainly, but a bit less in terms of enduring cinema. (Not that Conan is, but, well, it's a classic.)
Now I've had my dose of movies for the next year, so, don't expect any more movie reviews out of me.
