I never cared much for him in the trilogy-- he had only a few scenes, he seemed so smug, and seeing him through the lens of Tremaine just made him seem cold (she even describes him as "emotionally frozen" and I more or less wrote him off as such). But in the earlier book you can see a lot more how damaged he is and why and how oddly he copes, and appreciate much more what he is up to in the trilogy.
